Senior
Research Scientist and Lecturer, Molecular Cellular and Developmental
Biology, Yale University
Dr.
Ian Sussex is currently a Senior Research Scientist and Lecturer in the
Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at Yale University.
Prior to this, he was a Professor in the Plant Science Department at the
University of California, Berkeley. From 1960 to 1990 he was on the faculty
of the Biology Department of Yale University. Previously he was a faculty
member at the University of Pittsburgh, and Victoria University, New Zealand.
He graduated B.Sc. and M. Sc. from Auckland University College, New Zealand,
and obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Manchester, Great Britain.
He carried out post-doctoral studies and Harvard University, and the Agricultural
Research Center, Versailles, France.
His research focused initially on anatomical aspects of plant development
then moved to the field of plant developmental biology and most recently,
the molecular basis of plant development. He has published more than 125
papers in scientific journals and has co-authored five books including
Interacting Systems in Development that was translated into Japanese,
Spanish and Polish; and Patterns in Plant Development now in its second
edition that was translated into Japanese.
His primary teaching responsibilities are in the field of developmental
biology. He has served as co-organizer of the summer course in plant molecular
biology at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and has been a lecturer in
the course for 20 years.
He has served on grant review panels at NSF and USDA, on editorial boards
of several scientific journals and on the science advisory boards of two
biotechnology companies. He has also been a consultant for various companies.
He was President of the Society for Developmental Biology and Chair of
the Biological Sciences section of American Association for the Advancement
of Science. In 2005 he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award of the
Society for Developmental Biology.
